Ayurvedic Vasti Therapy Explained: Janu (Knee), Greeva (Neck) & Kadi (Lower Back)

Restore ease, mobility, and calm.

Janu Vasti, Greeva Vasti & Kadi Vasti (Ayurvedic Vasti Therapy): Origins, Oils, Benefits + 1-Hour Session Guide

Ayurveda offers deeply restorative external therapies for joint and spine discomfort, stiffness, and Vata imbalance. Janu Vasti (knee), Greeva Vasti (neck/cervical), and Kadi Vasti (lower back/lumbar) are traditional treatments where warm, medicated oil is held in a sealed “pool” over a specific area to nourish tissues, calm the nervous system, and support mobility.

At Zenmaya, we offer these therapies as a focused 1-hour session: Janu Vasti (30 minutes) + Kati Vasti (30 minutes) or Greeva Vasti (30 minutes) (depending on your needs). This structure is ideal for clients who want targeted relief with a clear, time-efficient protocol.

Origin: where Vasti therapies come from

The word “Vasti/Basti” is best known for Ayurvedic medicated enemas (a key Panchakarma therapy). Over time, Ayurveda also developed external Vasti practices—localized oil-retention treatments—especially popular in Kerala’s classical Ayurvedic lineage. These therapies are rooted in the Ayurvedic principle that warmth + unctuousness (oil) can pacify aggravated Vata dosha, which is commonly associated with dryness, degeneration, cracking joints, pain, and restricted movement.

What is Vasti therapy (oil pooling)?

In external Vasti, a ring is formed on the body (traditionally with black gram dough) to create a leak-proof boundary. Warm medicated oil is poured into the ring and maintained at a therapeutic temperature for a set time.

This helps:

Deliver sustained warmth to deeper tissues

Lubricate and nourish muscles, ligaments, and joints

Calm pain pathways and reduce stiffness

Support circulation and local tissue recovery
